Building Inbound Links to Your Website
November 23, 2008
For SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) purposes, getting other sites to point to yours will yield results. Not only do you get traffic from the links but you also come up higher in the search results when those sites linking to you are relevant and of high quality.
Here are 3 ideas for building links that you might like to consider
1. Create a Widget
Create a widget or tool that performs some kind of task and embed your site’s URL link in it. Offer it at no charge and thousands of sites may pick it up and put it to use on their sites. If you can’t create a widget yourself then try elance and find someone to do it for you. I asked for a widget creating that showed the number of websites linking back to another website. The cost was $90 which frankly is not that bad a deal!
2. Content Keyword Tagging
Content tagging is the process of assigning keywords to content or to bookmarks as a means of classifying and organising information in a way that makes sense to the user. You can assign keyword tags to blog posts and RSS feeds and even to the content on your website. Keyword tags make it easier for search engines and humans to understand how you’ve organised your information and in what categories. Similarly, with the use of a tagging/bookmarking tool, site visitors can mark any content and tag it with the keywords of their choice. A social media site can therefore be searched using a keyword tag to find others who share the same interests or see the sites they have bookmarked as good resources worth a return visit.
3. Social Media Links
No doubt you have heard all about Digg and Del.icio.us social media sites. You may even be using these social networks to promote your website already. The problem is discovering whether or not your target audience is using the site and therefore whether or not a social media strategy will pay off for you.
A different option is to use one of the growing number of niche social media sites such as ThisNext. ThisNext is a recommendation site for products of all kinds. The site is driven by visitor recommendations, each of whom tag their favorite products with keywords so that others with the same needs can find them.
So, if your company has products to market, you can set up your own account, pick a few products, tag them, add you company URL and then link up with others who share your tags.
Beware of self promotion within these social networks. That is not what they are built for and the users do not take kindly to their network being hijacked in an obvious manner.
