Submitting your website to search engines
September 13, 2008
The most proven and effective marketing tool for any website is a search engine. When compared to print advertisements, broadcast, or any other web based promotions, no other promotional medium is as valuable.
Submitting your completed website directly to a search engine is the first step toward success; you should always ensure that your site has the correct keyword density and has been properly coded including a site map. Although many companies falsely represent the ability to automatically submit your website information to a multitude of search engines, the only effective way is to do it manually. This can be achieved by either doing it yourself or hiring a search engine specialist. Search engine submission guidelines usually require pertinent information regarding your business including: website overviews, keywords and direct contact information.
Once your website has been submitted to a search engine, it may take some time before your website is ranked and made available for searching. The search engine must first deploy an automated program to document your site information. Then the information is processed by a series of algorithms and catalogued in the search engines database; additionally, your website may be audited by human editors to ensure credibility and consistency.
Although there are thousands of search engines and directories available to the public, some of the top search companies include Google, Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek, AltaVista, Excite and Inktomi.
